Despite the fact that The Beatles were relatively unknown in the US at the start of 1964, their publicity agents, Sid Bernstein and Derek Taylor worked tirelessly to build a buzz around the band prior to their arrival and they managed to organize the massive reception that greeted the band at New York's Kennedy Airport on February 7, 1964, where they were greeted by throngs of screaming girls.

One key factor in generating interest was their appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, which was scheduled for February 9, 1964. The band's agents knew that this would be a huge opportunity to introduce the group to American audiences, and they arranged for blanket press coverage, distributed promotional materials, and reached out to radio and TV stations groups to spread the word.

The critics loved them:
"Their harmonies were tight, their rhythm was precise, and their presence was electric. (The Los Angeles Times). "They sing, they play, they act, and the girls scream. What more could anyone want?" (The New York Times).
The group's first performance on the show marked their debut on American TV and was watched by an estimated 73 million viewers, making it one of the most-watched televised events in American history at the time. For days in advance fans lined up outside CBS Studio 50 in the heart of Manhattan where the show was filmed in order to secure tickets.

The reason the Deauville Hotel concert in Miami Beach, Florida on February 16 was not greeted with such rapturous applause as the New York shows is that it was not an actual concert but a closed-circuit television broadcast. Tickets were not sold for the event; the audience was made up of invited guests, journalists, and industry insiders who were in town to cover the show, so screaming girls were in a minority in the audience.
